Summary/Abstract: Diagnosing learners' needs in relation to a planned specialised foreign language course requires a good understanding of the professional area through the prism of job duties and correlated language activities. In a school setting, an in-depth analysis of learners' needs is not always feasible. Competency inventories can help in this regard, thanks to which the foreign language teacher will get to know the specifics of the professional area and job tasks, noting their interdependence with language activity. An operational example of a competency inventory that can be used by teachers of a professionally oriented foreign language (LSP) in the Polish educational system is the core curriculum for vocational education in professional education (Journal of Laws 2019, item 991). The article shows how the ministerial document can be used operationally for the diagnosis of needs in teaching a foreign language in Polish vocational secondary schools.
