Summary/Abstract: This article examines the role of space and place in the ecological approach to foreign language education. In this perspective, space is not a passive background but an active participant in the learning process, offering affordances that emerge through social, cultural, and linguistic interactions. The text highlights the interrelation between place, memory, and identity, demonstrating how learning environments influence cognitive and linguistic processes. Special attention is given to the concept of place-based education and the role of memory sites (lieux de mémoire) as contexts for learning. Drawing on empirical material from the project "Listen to the Museum", the article compares affordances of the museum space with those of the classroom. Findings suggest that the museum environment fosters authentic interactions, strengthens sociolinguistic and pragmatic competences, and situates language learning within cultural and historical experiences. At the same time, the classroom remains essential for systematic instruction. The article concludes by emphasizing the complementarity of these two learning environments and the potential of consciously designed spaces to enrich foreign language education.
