The Resettlement of Bulgarians in Bessarabia: Context and Influence on Cultural Identity

Summary/Abstract: The migration of Bulgarians to Bessarabia at the beginning of the 19th century marked a significant stage in the development of the Bulgarian community outside its traditional territories. Following the signing of the Treaty of Bucharest in 1812, as a result of Bessarabia’s incorporation into the Russian Empire and the intensified socio-political pressures in the Ottoman Empire, substantial groups of Bulgarians left their Danubian homelands and settled between the Prut and Dniester rivers. The ensuing demographic and cultural transformations led to the formation of a stable Bulgarian diaspora that preserved its linguistic, religious, and cultural identity while simultaneously adapting to the new conditions. The article analyses the historical context of the migration, the mechanisms of cultural adaptation and resilience, as well as the long-term consequences for the collective identity of the Bessarabian Bulgarians, with particular attention to the interaction between migratory experience and cultural self-awareness.
