Polyfonctionnalité interlinguale et intralinguale des morphèmes : le cas des gallicismes slovaques
Interlingual and intralingual polyfunctionality of morphemes: the case of Slovak Gallicisms

Summary/Abstract: Morphological adaptation constitutes a field of interaction between borrowing and word formation. A borrowed lexeme (lexical borrowing), adapted at both the inflectional and word formation levels, is characterised by the presence of polyfunctional morphemes. This distinctive feature manifests itself and operates in two ways: (1) interlingually (FR–SK), where it performs two functions: word formation and systematising, and (2) intralingually (SK–SK), here, too, it performs two functions: inflectional and word formation. The first process illustrates how the lexical status of the source lexeme in L1 – whether simplex or morphologically complex – conditions the adaptive mechanisms underlying the integration of its lexical counterpart in L2. The second process operates within the morphological system of L2 itself, while occasionally preserving morphomic residues from L1, as in the case of the L1 formant -ant, which functions as the infix -ant- in L2. The present study seeks to outline the core aspects of morpheme polyfunctionality and to demonstrate the extent to which their functioning can be systematised within the linguistic contact between Slovak and French. With a significant percentage rate (nearly 20%), it appears that the interaction between borrowing and word formation processes is highly prominent, although it manifests and operates differently at the intralingual and interlingual levels.
