In support of the public economy

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to revise the concept of the public economy as one that, rather than focusing on maximising profit, prioritises the fulfilment of socially-defined desirable objectives. At the theoretical level, the author was inspired by criticism of neoliberalism as an ideology that has dominated economic policy over the long term. The author cites integrated regional transport systems as an example of the public economy. In addition, he considers energy and housing to be candidates for the further development of the public economy in view of the deterioration of accessibility to housing and increases in energy prices, both of which contribute significantly to the impoverishment of a section of the population and the intensification of socio-political tensions.
