What does (sociological) thinking have to offer social work practice? The context of social work with homeless people (and people in housing need)

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to focus on the potential benefits that a sociological way of thinking can bring to social work practice. An example illustrating the potential benefits of a sociological way of thinking for practice is the field of social work with homeless people (in housing need) and related social policy in the context of the Czech Republic. Theoretical base is sociological analysis of the problem, relating personal (private) difficulties (concerns) and public (structural) problems. The article is conceived as a scholarly essay based on the theoretical literature and the author’s professional experience. Outcome of scholarly essay is, that sociological way of thinking can provide an analytical and argumentative tool for social work in relation to changing the structural conditions of clients of social work. And sociological thinking should be an important part of practical (as well as academic) social work reflection.
