Summary/Abstract: In this article, Jacek Dehnel’s autobiographical novel Lala is interpreted as a story about the extraordinary bond between a grandson and his grandmother, demonstrating the creative potential of intergenerational dialogue. The image of Grandma Lala created by Dehnel is, in fact, a double portrait presenting two different grandmothers: a lively elder gifted with a talent for spinning vivid tales, and an old woman transformed beyond recognition by progressing dementia, silent and inscrutable in her feelings. According to the author, by depicting two contrasting faces of old age, the writer attempts to overcome the profound sense of estrangement from a very close person who has become unrecognizable as a result of illness.
