Summary/Abstract: In the 17th and 18th centuries, numerous German-language poetry anthologies were created, whose prefaces, with a strongly emphasized cultural-patriotic interest, consistently advocated strongly for the establishment of German as a language of poetry. They all refer to Opitz, cite ancient, contemporary foreign, as well as German role models, and contain poetological instructions for a future generation of poets. This article attempts to highlight the programmatic character of the prefaces and illustrate their contribution to the development of German national literature using several examples, including Opitz, Neukirch, Hunold, Weichmann, among others.
