Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the image of the Second World War in House of Childhood by Anna Mitgutsch, a powerful story about the search for the remnants of a pre-Holocaust Austrian-Jewish culture, and the attempt to restore a lost home. The article analyzes how Mitgutsch presents the problem of different memories of the drama of the Second World War in her novel and how she deals with Jewish background and the Jewish past. The author connects the family history with the history of the entire nation, so it is examined in detail how she refers to the phenomenon of cultural and collective memory in her work, and whether she condemns the specifically Austrian memory of the events of the Holocaust and the long-standing tendency to deny the participation of Austrians in this war crime or to minimize their guilt.
