Iran and India as Places of Refuge for Polish Children During the Second World War

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the fate of Polish children who, after 17 September 1939, were deported deep into the USSR and then evacuated in 1942 to Iran and India as a result of the Sikorski–Mayski Agreement and the so-called “amnesty”. The analysis is based on ego-documents: the diary of Wanda Barbara Kociuba and the memoirs of Frank/Franciszek Herzog, which make it possible to reconstruct the deportees’ journey, living conditions in exile and in the camps of Isfahan and Balachadi, education, religious practices, scouting activities, holiday celebrations, and post-war dispersal, mainly to the United Kingdom and the United States.The text juxtaposes personal accounts with documents of the Polish government-in-exile and with the relevant literature, showing how community, school, and religion helped preserve the children’s identity.Artykuł omawia losy polskich dzieci wywiezionych po 17 września1939 roku w głąb ZSRS, a następnie ewakuowanych w 1942 roku do Iranui Indii dzięki układowi Sikorski–Majski oraz „amnestii”. Podstawą analizysą egodokumenty: pamiętnik Wandy Barbary Kociuby i wspomnieniaFranka (Franciszka) Herzoga, które pozwalają odtworzyć drogę zesłańców,warunki życia na zesłaniu i w obozach (Isfahan, Balachadi), edukację,praktyki religijne, działalność harcerstwa, obchody świąt, a takżepowojenne rozproszenie (głównie Wielka Brytania i USA). Tekst zestawiarelacje osobiste z dokumentami rządowymi na uchodźstwie i literaturą,ukazując, jak wspólnota, szkoła i religia pomagały ocalić tożsamość dzieci.
