Summary/Abstract: Simultaneous interpreting is one of the most cognitively demanding tasks in translation and interpreting studies, requiring linguistic mastery, rapid processing, extra-linguistic knowledge, and constant mental alertness. Because interpreters cannot pause or request clarification, even brief hesitation disrupts communication. This paper examines a key challenge in this process: obscure or unclear speech. Such difficulty arises when speakers are incoherent, ambiguous, poorly articulated, or when technical factors—background noise, weak sound systems, or overlapping voices—distort the message. Interpreters must therefore maintain fluent delivery while conveying meaning that may itself be uncertain. Drawing on the author’s professional experience, the study uses case-based analysis to illustrate real examples of obscure input and the strategies applied in real time, including approximation, reformulation, condensation, and contextual inference. By integrating practice-based insights with theories of cognitive load and sense-based interpreting, the paper argues that managing obscurity is a defining feature of simultaneous interpreting, demanding resilience, flexibility, and dedicated pedagogical attention.
