Summary/Abstract: The article aims to capture the progress that schooling in Sri Lanka has made over time, as well as the existing difficulties. The current education system is characterized by obvious progress regarding free access to education and deep systemic challenges related to quality, facilities, regional inequalities, insertion in the labor market. The education system in Sri Lanka dates back to 543 BC, thus having a history of over 2000 years. A former British colony, the country became independent in 1948 and developed a unified national education system. After independence, the number of schools and the literacy rate increased significantly, reaching approximately 10,012 public schools serving approximately 4,037,157 students, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education. Today, the country offers free education, from primary school to university, and this has contributed to a high literacy rate, over 92.61% (in 2023), one of the highest in the region.
