Loneliness of No Return and Internal Migrations: Alienation in Ethem Baran’s Book of Journeys of No Return

Summary/Abstract: Ethem Baran, who entered the literary scene in the 1980s, has established a distinctive place particularly in the field of the short story and has brought a fresh perspective to Turkish storytelling through the themes he explores. Leaving subtle yet profound traces in modern Turkish literature, Baran skillfully combines the individual's inner world, human psychology, and social issues in his works. His Dönüşsüz Yolculuklar Kitabı, published in 2005, reflects the individual's inner and social fractures, with alienation occupying a central position. This study examines the experiences of alienation portrayed in Dönüşsüz Yolculuklar Kitabı at the social, spatial, and existential levels. Issues such as rural-to-urban migration, nostalgia for the past, problems of belonging, and loneliness are discussed as dynamics that reveal different dimensions of alienation. The study analyzes the multilayered structure of alienation by focusing on the individual's alienation from the self, from society, and from time and space. Following a brief discussion of the emergence of alienation and its reflections in world and Turkish literature, the main part of the study provides a detailed analysis of examples of alienation in the stories collected in Dönüşsüz Yolculuklar Kitabı.
