Summary/Abstract: Sociology is a science that emerged in the West with the aim of finding solutions to social problems. The vast majority of our sociologists have been influenced by Western sociologists. This transfer effect, which began with Ziya Gökalp and Prince Sabahaddin, continues rapidly. Thinking about the sociology of Turkey and preparing studies that address the ideas of sociologists are important in terms of our sociological history. This article includes the contributions of Ziya Gökalp, the founder of sociology and the sociology department in Turkey, to Turkish sociology, and the understanding of education and culture. Gökalp, who stands out with his views and suggestions in Turkish sociology, has been effective in bringing sociology to its current level in Turkey. Many writings and contemporaries who mentioned him described him as an ideologist, an intellectual, and a politician. Gökalp's thoughts on culture and education deeply influenced modernizing Turkey. He shed light on the importance of people's progress by preserving their own cultural heritage during the modernization phase and, for this purpose, he tried to determine the content of social progress by blending it with educational policies. Understanding Gökalp’s understanding of education and culture is directly related to understanding his famous duality of culture and civilization and to comprehending our relations with Western society.
