Difficulties in Acquiring Romanian by Foreign Students in the Preparatory Year: The Category of Determination

Summary/Abstract: The effectiveness of explicit grammar instruction in foreign language education remains a controversial topic, with studies yielding conflicting results. This study examines the role of explicit grammar teaching in the acquisition of Romanian articles among adult learners of Romanian as a foreign language. The objectives of our study were twofold : first, to assess whether students’ results on a grammar exercise improved after explicit teaching of the rules and, second, to determine if students applied the rules when producing written sentences. The study was conducted with a group of 60 students enrolled in the preparatory year program for Romanian as a foreign language at the “Ovidius” University of Constanta, in 2023. Our research hypothesis was that students would have an easier time using indefinite articles, but have difficulty with definite articles. The results showed that the students preferred to use definite articles or indeterminate nouns but avoid indefinite articles. Another finding was that they made more mistakes with the articulation of nouns that are less used in everyday speech than with the articulation of nouns considered relevant in daily speech. This leads to the conclusion that Romanian articles can be correctly acquired through repetition and meaningful practice.
