Summary/Abstract: Today, democracy is shaped by global power relations, international institutions, and multinational actors, while the direct participation of the people in the political process remains limited. While globalization and migration movements lead to divisions in societies and an increase in the recognition demands of minority groups and opponents, examples such as the Russia- Ukraine war, the Gaza occupation, and the refugee crisis have strengthened separatist movements and increased criticisms of democracy. These situations have revealed the necessity of democratizing democracy in today's politics. In particular, while globalization expands the boundaries of democratic politics, democracy itself is also transforming. The fundamental problem of how to establish coexistence democratically, along with new, pluralistic and differentiated (ecological, gender and identity policies) demands for rights and freedoms, still exists. This article examines the current crisis of democracy, the legacy of the revolutions of modernity, in the context of globalization and capitalism, and discusses how phenomena such as majoritarian despotism, electoral autocracies, and liberal authoritarianism are related to this crisis. The obstacles to the democratization process are analyzed in the context of the impact of neoliberal and populist policies on the decline of the democratic public sphere, global economic imbalances, and the role of nationstates.
