Summary/Abstract: Reading comprehension is a complex process that requires not only linguistic skills but also the ability to monitor and regulate one’s own reading process. This article offers a theoretical reflection on the role of metacognitive strategies in reading comprehension in Italian, with a particular focus on the processes of planning, monitoring, and self-regulation. The paper analyzes the relationship between reading comprehension, metacognition, and self-regulated learning, while also highlighting the role of teachers in developing metacognitive awareness. The discussion highlights how metacognitive strategies can promote more effective, independent, and conscious reading in the learning of Italian as a foreign language.
