Summary/Abstract: The development of old book research was closely connected to technological transformations that shaped academic practices during the last decades. More than 20 years ago, research involved moving to the location of sources and handwritten filling in of worksheets, than working on the synthesis. Laptop and copies of works made at the depository institutions marked a new stage, supporting not only the individual effort of the researcher, by offering supplementary time for research, but also opening the boundaries of research to a wider variety of subjects. For more than 10 years, more and more depository institutions opened to online research, eliminitating the factor of moving on-site, in the context of digitization and digitalisation, thereby redifining once more report between time and space and resources in research. Questions regarding the future of library in the digital era were on the agenda of the major depositories of knowledge, that assimilated the progress of technology and reinvented themselves to remain accessible to the general public and researchers. In relation to the transformations in the field of research generated by digitisation, digitalization and digital transformation, latetly, a new concept has emerged reclaimimg areas of the most diverse of professional life and even personal one: artificial intelligence. A concept that currently has not yet been explored in all its functions, the main pursuit being, beyond the benefits of its usage, the limits that must be imposed to this still unknown field. This paper proposes to examine the manner in which this innovative work instrument may be used in the research of old book, for example, for the automatic transcription of texts, the processing of large volumes of data or support in identification of sources and the text circulation. For perception as close as possible to its possibilities of exploitation, analysis will start from the manner in which European and national legislation define at this moment artificial inteligence and limits of its usage, then tracing the reference points for a first general approach, regarding the objective ways in which artificial intelligence may support research of old books, without excluding the human factor. The study follows the concept of artificial intelligence, as potential valuable complementary instrument in research of old book, subjected to its usage in an enacted framework and critically controlled by human.
