Between Letter and Meaning – Three Translations of “The Physics of Sorrow” (Spanish, French and English Editions)

Summary/Abstract: The study of literary translation is an in-depth reading that not only places the text “under the microscope” and probes into its imagery but also gives us an idea of how successfully this imagery has been recreated in its foreign-language versions. The present article focuses on the English, French, and Spanish translations of the novel “Physics of Sorrow” by Georgi Gospodinov. Under examination are representative groups of problematics in translation, such as archaisms and Turkisms, verbal forms with folkloric influence, the Cyrillic alphabet in translation, wordplays, idioms, fixed expressions, and symbolic names. The aim of the study is to reveal how challenging it can be to recreate culture-specific and historically marked vocabulary in another language and to identify the possible approaches in solving translation tasks in each of the aforementioned problem areas.
