Summary/Abstract: The subject of this article is the process constituting the critical reception of Cervantes in Bulgaria generated by the act of translation. It aims to present a brief overview of the first two periods of reception of the author (1859-1918 and 1918-1944), having in mind the periodisation of the reception of West European literature in Bulgaria. The text dwells on the Bulgarian translations of Don Quixote, laying emphasis on the interpretations of the novel which differ quite substantially and depend on the stage in the development of Bulgarian history, culture and literature.
