Summary/Abstract: The article explores autofictional writing in contemporary Bulgarian literature in relation to the reader, the latter considered to be radically “open” to such a narrative. The focus lies on the study of autofiction’s social aspect rooted in the idea of self-exploration through writing. Thus, the author’s biographical opening provides readers with a closer path to the story and a self-identification opportunity. The process is reconstructed and illustrated through a considerably limited amount of readers’ impressions of Georgi Gospodinov’s book “Death and the Gardener,” delivered on social media. The identification with and empathy towards Gospodinov’s story results from readers’ own attempts to cope with death and loss.
