Summary/Abstract: The article aims to illustrate a subversive strategy less discussed in Romanian literary criticism, namely the rewriting of Christian prayers – The Lord’s Prayer, The Apostles’ Creed – in a humorous, ironic, satirical or pamphletary style, in verse or prose, at different historical moments, in order to highlight the way in which was built the relationship between the canonical religious form and the insurgent political content. For each era dominated by a tyrannical government, the author analyzes a subversive prayer of a representative writer: Alecu Văcărescu, for the Phanariot period, Mihail Kogălniceanu, for the Forty-eighters period, Eugen Jebeleanu, Ioanid Romanescu and Mircea Dinescu, for the Communist period.
