Summary/Abstract: Among the areas of focus in the theological-historical research of Father Professor Milan Șesan were studies and articles on the struggle against Byzantine imperial iconoclasm and the veneration of holy icons, as well as research on Christian iconography among Orthodox peoples. From an analysis of the studies published by Father Șesan on this topic—which is the subject of this study—we noted the meticulousness with which he approached the study and evaluation of documentary sources. This ensures that the results of the professor’s research remain relevant today, and the hypotheses he proposed have served as catalysts for subsequent research in this field. The study also aims to highlight the quality of university theological education in Sibiu during Father Șesan’s tenure and that of the cohort of professors trained in “Metropolitan Nicolae Bălan’s school,” in academic competition with the theology professors in Bucharest, during a time of restrictions and censorship imposed by the communist regime.
