Summary/Abstract: During the Word War II in occupied Poland, the Germans looted private gold and valuables both to fuel the war machine of the Third Reich and to personally enrich the representatives of the occupying power. This article presents some findings from an analysis of sources created by various Polish state institutions regarding the amount of gold and valuables stolen and the methods of their plunder. Despite several data verifications in postwar Poland, determining the amount of private gold looted or the value of valuables is very difficult. It is much easier to establish the methods of looting, which included plunder in concentration camps, breaking bank safe deposit boxes, and the forced purchase or confiscation of gold from citizens.
