Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the fictionalised account of Dmitri Shostakovich’s life and work presented in Julian Barnes’s novel “The Noise of Time”. To explore the dialogue between historical facts and fiction, the novel is analysed within the context of other works examining both the life and work of the Russian composer, and the specifics of socio-political life in Soviet Russia. The text also focuses on the novel’s poetics and the distinctive features of Julian Barnes’s narrative style.
