Summary/Abstract: The focus of this article is the novel “Orfeo” by the contemporary American writer Richard Powers. The reference to the figure of Orpheus places this text in a centuries-old and almost uninterrupted tradition of rewritings of the ancient myth, especially in literary works in which music is a central theme. In the article, the historical stages of this tradition are briefly recalled in order to reconstruct the context to which Powers’ novel belongs. In the interpretation we propose here, we were interested mainly to the specific and – in some way – hidden form of participation of the mythological matrix in the semantic and narrative construction of the novel.
