Summary/Abstract: The article examines the role of musical reminiscences in Zahari Karabashliev’s novel Rana (The Wound) and their interaction with the war discourse. Music is explored not only as a cultural marker of the era but also as an ethical and emotional counterpoint to violence. Through references to classical works such as “Shumi Maritsa,” “The Blue Danube,” “Ode to Joy,” and Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden,” the novel constructs a multilayered soundscape that reveals the inner world of the characters and their efforts to preserve their humanity in the context of war. The analysis also considers the dialogue with Nietzsche’s philosophy, which introduces a metaphysical dimension to the perception of history, memory, and moral choice. The text demonstrates how the musical layer functions as a form of spiritual resistance and as a key to the polyphony of memory, transforming Rana into a novel where art becomes the final refuge of humaneness.
