Summary/Abstract: The text examines the rising and development of the concept “world music” (as a marketing and cultural category) in the context of globalization and the transformations in the music industry at the end of the 20th century. The author analyzes perceptions of the concept – such as the issues of cultural imperialism, hybridity and authenticity. The relationships between global markets, local musical identities and the political dimensions of cultural exchange are carefully depictured. The article challenges the idea of neutral globalization, emphasizing the role of power, cultural hierarchies and economic dependencies in shaping the global music scene.
