Summary/Abstract: The present text analyzes the relationship between musical practice, culture, and biological evolution; the music is seen as a universal human need. The author distinguishes music as a universal phenomenon and music as a manifestation in the form of numerous culturally conditioned “musics.” The study focuses on the materialistic and social nature of musical behavior and raises the question of its evolutionary function. Music is presented as a biocultural phenomenon that cannot be separated from human biology or the cultural environment in which it comes into being and functions.
