Summary/Abstract: In March 2014, the European Union and the USA decided to impose sanctions against Russia because of the significant involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the Crimea annexation, and the shooting down of the Malaysian airlines plane. Restrictions included Russian and Ukrainian officials following Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, or entities providing support to and benefitting from that case. Sanctions concerning diplomatic measures, assets freezes and visa bans were seen to be an element of pressure on Russia to change its policy towards eastern Ukraine. Sanctions influenced the political and socioeconomic situation in Russia. The international criticism of its commitment towards the east of Ukraine and Crimea devaluated Russia’s political position. Its economy has weakened as a result of the embargo against the EU and the US in recent months. Russia has been forced to look for new partners but she is not alone. Russia is active in the Far East, strengthens cooperation with the Central and Eastern Europe countries and weakens the unity of the EU. Restrictions have influenced the Russian internal policy as well, but it is not clear whether it strengthens or weakens Putin’s popularity in the future. It is believed that they will not only change Russia’s policy towards Ukraine but also bring democratic change in Russia.
