Summary/Abstract: When Mary of Hungary died in 1558, she owned twenty-four paintings believed to be by Titian, making her collection by that artist the second largest at the time. Little is known about how she acquired them. This study examines these paintings (most of which have been destroyed), her particular role in relation to them, and Titian’s arrangement with Mary.
