Summary/Abstract: The article is a discussion of Paulina Drozdowska’s research monograph Teatr im. Stefana Żeromskiego w Kielcach po 1945: Siła lokalności (The Stefan Żeromski Theatre in Kielce after 1945: The Power of Locality), which examines the post-war history of the Kielce theatre. Drozdowska analyses its activity in terms of programme, socio-political changes, and the role of locality in shaping the institution’s identity. She focuses on the work of artistic and managing directors Hugo Moryciński, Tadeusz and Irena Byrski, and Piotr Szczerski, recognising it as pivotal to the theatre’s development. The reviewer highlights the value of the book as an important contribution to research on the history of regional theatre and appreciates the author’s extensive range of sources, accessible narrative style, and the engaging presentation of the theatre’s performances. At the same time, significant limitations of Drozdrowska’s book are pointed out, primarily the omission of several important periods in the history of the Kielce theatre (particularly the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s), as well as insufficient consideration of the political conditions under which it operated in People’s Poland and after 1989. The reviewer notes that the concept of the “power of locality” has not been clearly defined and that the book lacks a synthetic summary that could capture the specific character of the Kielce theatre against other regional stages.
