Summary/Abstract: In 2023, we will celebrate the 160th anniversary of the January Uprising outbreak. It provokes further reflection on this event and its main protagonists. Among them were also women, which encourages further research on this form of their involvement in the independence movement. The aspect of the place of women in the historiography of the January Uprising (up to 1918), taken up, albeit very randomly, has prompted the author to conduct further research in this field. The review of scientific and popular literature presented in the article, although it certainly does not cover the entire subject, has reminded the names of women – heroines, actively involved in the January Uprising. Certainly, the historiography of the People’s Republic of Poland contributed to the fact that women – passive and active participants of the events of 1860–1863/64 – were noticed and valued not only as “silent heroines of the uprising”. Many of them paid for their bravery with their lives, with deportation or imprisonment, therefore the memory of their heroism should not be overlooked, both in historiography and in historical education.
