Summary/Abstract: Tourist resorts, as they are known nowadays, can be considered important development poles of local and/or regional tourism, given the concentration of tourism resources and tourist activity. The present paper, constructed as a case study, investigates the spatio-temporal evolution of Romanian resorts, grouping them by type of locality to which they belong administratively. In addition, the analysis defines two new categories of resorts, the ‘old’ and ‘new’ resorts, based on their presence in a tourist guide from the communist period. The status of tourist resorts is attracting an increase in tourism activity as shown within this research, mainly when the national resorts are under scrutiny. Though, one can observe an uneven distribution, mainly at regional level, especially in the case of local tourist resorts. Currently, all tourist resorts are facing the challenge of shorter trips/vacations and the need to compensate for this phenomenon by attracting more tourists, hence the need to improve and diversify their tourism products. An alternative classification of these resorts also emerges based on these tourism products. Mainly for local resorts, improved data availability is necessary for improved research results.
