Summary/Abstract: The study of academic semiophores makes it possible to map collective academic memory and, in doing so, to define the frameworks of thinking and acting of those connected with it. For this reason, the subject of the article is semiophores related to the past of selected European universities. The article presents the results of a comparative ethnographic study based on the analysis and interpretation of data collected through (self)observation and the examination of secondary sources. The research focused on questions such as: What is the nature of semiophores located in university spaces? What is their importance in the architectural, social, cultural, and educational dimensions of the university, particularly from the perspective of intercultural transmission? The findings suggest that universities demonstrate a responsible approach to commemorating their past. At the same time, however, the body of semiophores at these universities is marked by a certain homogeneity in the scope of commemorated content, which has educational implications. This homogeneity results in a lack of optimization in the use of material spaces of memory for achieving multilevel intercultural transmission.
