Summary/Abstract: The verses 1 Kings 18:27–28 may be regarded as a distinct subunit within the narrative of the contest over the true God on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:21–40). They contain a number of problems that call for closer investigation. The ancient translators slightly altered the text at a point that was unclear to them. A close analysis of this passage discusses the relevant parallels from Ugaritic literature and, on the margins, considers whether a Hittite myth may contribute to its interpretation. The passage is undergirded by the knowledge that YHWH is the true God.
