Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the concept of glas (melodic line) in traditional vocal music in Macedonia and its usage in both folk terminology and scholarly definitions. The term, which refers to a melodic line or vocal model used for the performance of songs – most often ritual songs – is deeply rooted in local tradition and appears in various contexts such as lazarički glas, vodičarski glas, svadbarski glas, and others. Through an analysis of the available literature and field recordings from different regions of Macedonia, the study investigates the meanings, local variants, and possible synonymous terms, including mekam, which appear among Macedonians of the Islamic religion. The aim is to determine whether the term glas retains its fundamental function as a musical model across different communities and to shed light on the phenomenon of its interpretation in both folk and academic discourse. The research seeks to contribute to a clearer understanding of folk terminology and to deepen the comprehension of local concepts of musical modeling and expression.
