Summary/Abstract: I seek to answer how and why the Habsburg educational reform policies of the Enlightenment absolutism and neo-absolutism periods were able to achieve lasting results in Hungary. These two waves of reform together introduced measures that still largely determine the structure and the operating principles of the Hungarian educational system. These time-tested innovations, which resulted in structural changes, are particularly exciting because they were thus born from the outside, in an absolutist manner, and accompanied by a certain resistance from the order, in one of the country’s major social subsystems. This paper will explore the reasons for the successes and the failures that lie behind them.
