Summary/Abstract: Punishment constitutes the fundamental pillar of criminal law, representing a legal sanction through which the state represses criminal conduct, prevents the commission of new acts and facilitates the re-education of the offender. It combines the function of coercion with that of re-education and is applied in accordance with the principles of legality, humanism and individualization, materializing through main, complementary and accessory punishments, which reflect both special and general prevention.
