THE ROLE OF THE MODERN INTELLIGENTSIA IN THE FORMATION OF REGIONAL IDENTITY AND PATRIOTISM IN SMALL TOWNS OF CENTRAL RUSSIA (ON THE EXAMPLE OF GUS-KHRUSTALNY)

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to study the role of the modern local intelligentsia in the formation of regional identity and patriotism in the city of Gus-Khrustalny (Vladimir region). This study is based on ethnographic materials collected by the author in 2020—2025. The Gus intelligentsia (its partial degradation in the 1990s), has changed by now, and has not lost its best qualities and spiritual potential. This article presents a portrait of a modern Gusev intellectual. The main attention in this article is paid to the models of activity of the intelligentsia: public events (lectures, holidays, exhibitions, thematic meetings, performances, concerts), written materials. The key question: the role of local identity and patriotism in these models of activity. Using the example of the activities of writers and local historians (members of the literary association “Meshchera”), this issue is examined from the point of view of the presentation of the history of the city. The contradiction between the Meshchera and Gusev identities was identified during the study. The formation of new local heroes by local writers has also been studied. It was noted that there are also negative aspects to the activities of the Meshchera association. In this article the influence of the school on the formation of the young generation in the ideological sphere was showed. The demand and realization of the potential of the Gusev intelligentsia in the modern local society exists, but this process is largely spontaneous, not regulated by local and regional authorities. Despite the fact that the local administration partly participates in the process of forming local identity and patriotism, but this is more unconscious than a tendency. There is no “state order” for the formation of local identity and patriotism.
