JUVENILE DELINQUENCY IN THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA: LEGAL FRAMEWORK, STATISTICS AND CORRECTIVE MEASURES

Summary/Abstract: The research paper analyzes juvenile delinquency in the Republic of Croatia, with an emphasis on the legal framework, statistics and the imposition of corrective measures. The frequency and structure of criminal offenses committed by juveniles are analyzed. The author also analyzes the factors that influence the conflict of juveniles with legal provisions, including the role of the family, education and the environment in which they grow up. The paper also presents a comparative analysis of selected European countries in order to identify similar trends and positive legal practice. The Croatian juvenile justice system is based on rehabilitation, in accordance with modern European legal practices, and preventive programs and an interdisciplinary system are key to reducing juvenile delinquency. The aim of the paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the frequency and structure of criminal offenses committed by juveniles, to identify factors that influence their conflict with the law and to investigate the effectiveness of educational measures and certain preventive programs. Data analysis, as well as available relevant literature and research results show that the majority of criminal offenses committed by juveniles are property crimes. Furthermore, the hypotheses that family and social factors influence delinquent behavior are confirmed and that the Croatian judicial system primarily uses corrective measures, while juvenile imprisonment is rarely imposed. The paper uses data analysis methods, reviews of relevant professional and scientific literature, statistical analysis of data from the Republic of Croatia, as well as a comparative method that provides insight into differences and similarities in the approach to juvenile delinquency. The paper can serve as a basis for further research and the development of new preventive programs.
