WOMEN VICTIMS OF CRIMINAL OFFENSES - presentation and characteristics of PERPETRATORS OF CRIMINAL OFFENSES OF FAMILY VIOLENCE

Summary/Abstract: Violence against women as physically weaker beings is a ubiquitous phenomenon since the distant past that was not previously sanctioned, but over time, women victims have gained their place in criminal policy, and today we can talk about more significant protection of women victims of violence. As various forms of violence appeared, there were also changes in the legal regulations for punishing perpetrators of violence against women. Thus, female victims are declared as persons who have suffered certain damage caused by a criminal act. Violence against women is also defined in the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women. Family violence includes the use of physical violence (corporal punishment or putting the victim in a humiliating position), psychological violence (which threatens the dignity of the victim), economic violence, and sexual violence. The paper consists of two parts; introductory and research part. In the introductory part, the author gives a short introduction to victimology, presents and analyzes individual international and domestic sources of protection against domestic violence. On the other hand, the author shows the characteristics of perpetrators of criminal acts in the family, where women are the victims. The aim and purpose of the work is the analysis of the policy of punishing perpetrators of crimes against women, as well as the analysis of the imposed sentences and certain special obligations. In accordance with the above, the basic research question is asked: What are the characteristics of perpetrators of the criminal act of domestic violence. Empirical research for the purposes of writing the paper was carried out using the questionnaire method on the population of prisoners who were serving a prison sentence in the Republic of Croatia during the year 2024 due to the initiation of the criminal offense referred to in Art. 179.a of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Croatia (Narodne Novine 125/11). The questionnaire was arranged in such a way that the collected data were suitable for the application of multivariate data analysis. In order to better clarify the statistically obtained results, a qualitative method and a meta analysis will be used. In the paper, the author gives his comments, warnings and possible recommendations for future research.
