Summary/Abstract: In the contemporary context, there is an acute alienation from the patristic tradition, visible especially in the tendency to identify νοῦς exclusively with discursive reason (διάνοια). Such a conceptual reduction diminishes the understanding of the complex structure of human intellectual faculties and ignores the fact that, in the teaching of the Fathers, beyond the rational-discursive function there is a higher cognitive power, designated by the term νοῦς, which, together with the heart (καρδία), constitutes the center of inner life and the condition for the possibility of spiritual knowledge. The secularization of today's culture manifests itself, to a large extent, through an atrophy of the sensitivity of the heart, which blocks access to authentic knowledge: man cannot acquire the consciousness of the reality of what he does not possess internally. Moreover, modern anthropology, detached from the theological foundation of defining man in relation to God, tends to either elude or minimize the ontological status of the heart, sometimes associating it with a form of passivity or even spiritual "death," while the νοῦς is perceived as an obscured faculty, difficult to recognize and integrate into human experience. In this context, an in-depth theological re-evaluation of the concepts of noetic and heart is all the more necessary, since their diminution in contemporary reflection affects the very understanding of the person. For the Christian in whom the Holy Spirit works and who, through ascetic exercise and self knowledge, is in a state of inner "discovery," the scholastic framework often appears insufficient: the immediate experience of grace introduces him to an existential knowledge of the presence and reality of the νοῦς, beyond the speculative determinations of theological discourse.
