Summary/Abstract: The present paper analyzes the functioning of taverns (karczmy) within the northern territories of 15-century Elbląg Commandery - areas encompassing the bailiwicks of Pasłęk, Burdajny, Morąg, and Miłakowo, as well as the Forestry Office in Młynary. Its aims are twofold: to demonstrate taverns' significance in settlement structures, and to examine the phenomenon of tavern dereliction alongside the Teutonic authorities' restoration efforts. The study posits that inns were a vital component of the Teutonic Order's economy, noting that the drive to maintain them in sufficient number was primarily dictated by their fiscal significance and the prevailing system of annual rents. The analysis draws on rent books as the source material, employing geographical and statistical methods to map tavern distribution and quantify the extent of dereliction and restoration. Ultimately, these findings provide new insights into the spatial organization and daily life within the State of the Teutonic Order.
