Summary/Abstract: The present paper discusses and publishes previously unknown letters from King Stanisław August to his nephew, Prince Stanisław Poniatowski, written during the latter's early educational travels to England, France, Switzerland, and Italy between 1771 and 1774. The letters, held in the Poniatowski family archive in Paris and not previously a subject of scholarly inquiry, reveal the monarch's deliberate efforts to groom his nephew as a surrogate son and potential successor to the Polish throne. They disclose the close relationship between the uncle and the young Poniatowski at a critical juncture in the formation of the latter's exceptionally mature personality and rather austere worldview. The monarch's letters are deeply personal in nature and reveal a close rapport between the correspondents.
