Summary/Abstract: The liberalisation of access to the legal advisor profession seeks to give effect to the principle of freedom of choice of profession enshrined in Article 65 of the Constitution, but has simultaneously produced adverse consequences for legal professional bodies and the legal services market. The introduction of a so-called non-traineeship route for candidates wishing to practise as legal advisors should be accompanied by guarantees that they posess the requisite knowledge and experience, as well as the psychological aptitude and ethical standards required of the profession.
