Summary/Abstract: Serbia is often described as a stabilocracy in the post-Yugoslav region. According to this concept, popularized by Florian Bieber, such a state – characterized by a liberal democracy still in the making – acts as a driving force of democratic transition in the region. Owing to its influence, the stability of its institutions, oriented toward democratic consolidation, is expected to radiate outward and guide neighbouring countries along the path toward European democracy. This article seeks to examine the origins of this status attributed to Serbia by confronting it with historical reality. It further explores the limits of Serbian stabilocracy, analysing how this academic label may ultimately turn against democracy when it is used to legitimize political practices – such as the patrimonialization of the state – that run counter to the process of Europeanization.
