Summary/Abstract: The entire life of Saint Athanasius the Great, despite all the hardships and conflicts with the authorities and with Arians of all types, despite the five exiles, was dedicated to defending the fact that the Son was of the same being with the Father, becoming through his fight with the Arians an icon of Nicene Orthodoxy. The present study aims to present, on the one hand, the Christology of Saint Athanasius during the decline of the Arian heresy, and on the other hand, to emphasize the fact that Saint Athanasius is among the first Fathers of the Church to notice and reject the emergence of the heresy of the pneumatomachia, thus laying the foundations of the first elements of pneumatology from which the Cappadocian Fathers would draw inspiration. The Epistles of Saint Athanasius the Great to Saint Serapion of Thmuis are four dogmatic letters written between 356 and 360, addressed to Bishop Serapion, a close associate of Saint Anthony the Great and a supporter of Orthodoxy in the face of the Arian heresy. These letters deal in depth with the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, confuting the teachings of the pneumatomachias, who denied the complete divinity of the Holy Spirit. The letters are considered an essential part of Athanasian christology and pneumatology.
