Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the responses to David Cope’s The Game, which investigates whether listeners can distinguish between music composed by humans and music composed by computers. After outlining the basic premises of The Game, I will present Douglas Hofstadter’s critique, which concludes pessimistically about the nature of the depth of music and of the human mind. Finally, I will examine Deirdre Loughridge’s alternative perspective, which questions the traditional division between human and machine in the process of musical composition.
