Summary/Abstract: The present study sets out the authors' intention to analyse the actions of the USSR authorities in 1944 in Crimea against the Tatar population living there. In doing so, they formulated a thesis that these actions could be qualified as genocide. The starting point for the considerations was an analysis of the concept of R. Lemkin, who was the first to use the term 'genocide', describing its techniques, means, aims and causes. The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was underpinned by these considerations. The formal-dogmatic method was used in the first instance in relation to R. Lemkin's arguments and in interpreting the Convention. When undertaking a linguistic analysis, the hermeneutic method was employed, albeit in a limited capacity. However, when evaluating the actions of the repressive apparatus of the USSR, the method of axiological study of law was utilised. The research conducted resulted in the conclusion that the deportation of the Tatar population from Crimea in 1944 encompassed all the elements of genocide.
